I'm not taking shots at this group, I'm asking what anyone knows about them. On their site ( www.raceforadoption.com ) they say "RFA funds have enabled SEGA to haul more dogs from JCKC, FL into adoption groups". And that's awesome, knowing what we know about that track and their recent call for help. But then further down the main page you see the GRA/America logo and a link to that group( www.gra-america.org ). Personally I'd be more inspired by RFA if they distanced themselves from GRA but maybe I'm biased. They(GRA) are certainly biased against anyone who disagrees with them. What do you know about RFA? Good thing or industry gimic?

They donated over $100,000 to adoption last year. How can that not be a good thing. Owners donating all monies that a specified dog makes going to this cause. They're not picking little low grade dogs at low grade tracks either. Top dogs from top tracks. The only real correlation with GRA is that a lot of the people involved belong to both organizations. Both racing organizations, so you're going to get a lot of cross representation.

personally, i don't care about the affiliations since the money goes to a good cause. in fact, i contributed to the first race for adoption dog, when they were selling shares (with a small group of people, who had since kicked me out because of my AR stance LOL). it it a way for racing to give back to retiring hounds.

I think it's a great organization too. I also bought a share in the first pup that raced.

We own one of the current racers (No Cover Becki) and one that is still on the farm (Oban OnTheRocks). The only two actively racing greyhounds we own (outside of one confirmed couch potato) are involved in the RFA program. For us, it has nothing to do with gimmicks and everything to do with supporting adoption. For us, with only two dogs, racing is not profitable. Both pups would have to do relatively well for us to break even on their initial purchase price and boarding costs. We do not donate 100% of the purse money we receive for Indie, but 25% of what we receive. Between sponsorship shares and purse winnings, Northern Lights Greyhound Adoption received $1500 in 2005 they wouldn't have received otherwise.
I am really surprised to see RFA questioned as a gimmick. Everyone I have had the opportunity to speak with who is involved with RFA is so focused on the promotion of adoption and doing what can be done to ensure adoptable dogs reach their forever homes. It is a heart and soul grass roots movement that I can only hope will spread like crazy through racing.
Indie was the third dog to become an active RFA racer. There are currently 11, with two retirees, and it has only been a year. Can you imagine how big this has the potential to become and the good that will come out of it for the dogs?

Did you find the site DH maintains for her? or just what is at RFA? www.giantspace.net has lots of pictures of her, plus most of her races are archived there so you can watch them if you are interested

I just realized we don't have any of her puppy pictures on the site. I will have to talk to DH about that. We have some that are from when she was just hours old!

I saw her site, yeah. I was going to ask if you had puppy pics. I bookmarked it. Did you see her when she was a puppy?

We have never actually met her. Her breeder had pictures and the owner of the farm had stories to tell, though. They have truly been very patient with us, especially considering I am the one who handles most of the interactions, and I am very much a "pet" person rather than a "working dog" person, if you can follow me?

That is how I'd be, too. I'd want to see pics and I'd tell them to "kiss her" for me, lol

Race for Adoption is an effort by racing professionals that is also an idea that is a long time coming. It is raising money daily for a worthy cause, and I can not see any reason to belittle it, no matter who or which organizaion has its label on it. I am not saying anyone here is belittling it, but even if GRA backs RFA, who cares? As long as the greyhounds are getting the money that they deserve for adoption. We have two greyhounds here at Cloverleaf that will break in this season associated with RFA, and hopefully they will raise a ton of money for our local adoption group, Rocky Mountain Greyhound Adoption.
