Welcome aboard! First of all, 
on your adoption of Chase. He sounds like a sweetie. As far his barking I do feel for you. My female Cricket is a big time barker as well. When she hears something outside or sees another dog being walked in front of the house or when I'm getting ready to take them for their walks she goes crazy. Be patient and I do agree with Sighthound's advise in trying to use the 'quiet' command. If that doesn't work you can always try a squirt bottle on him and tell him "NO BARK". It doesn't hurt them and it just may work....good luck!!
