Hi I am a new owner of a three yr old grey named Chase. We love him. He's great and an all around wonderful pet. However he is a barker. I had read that greys aren't much of barking dogs. He barks for no reason and wants to be let outside to bark at the other dogs in the neighborhood when he hears them barking. There are two dogs on the other side of our shared fence they bark non-stop at him when he's outside with them but he never barks back?!?!? It's only when there is no dog present he barks. Is this normal?? How can I keep the barking to a minimum without squashing his "dog personality"?

Hi kellloggs, welcome!!! You will find a lot of people here able to help you with your barking question.... unfortunately not me as my dog almost never barks. He does howl, though... very eerie sounding. Welcome to the board, though, you will like it here....and on your new addition! Pics are also required, um, I mean, encouraged!

Welcome!
Ask for barking.... Kent only barks when he doesn't get to chase the lure at the races, he does not like waiting his turn. And a few times he has barked at me to hurry up so we can hit the beach, but never like you describe. I'm pr3tty sure you can train him not to do that though.

Hello and welcome. I suggest training a 'quiet' command. Is he food motivated? If so it should be easy, when he barks, simply say 'quiet', then when he stops to sniff the treat give it to him and say the word again. He should soon grasp it

Welcome aboard! #thwelcomesmilie# I would by some cheap plastic tarps and hang it on the fence. If they don't see each other they won't have anything to bark at! :o It worked for a friend of mine. Her greys would run the fence line with the neighbor's dog everytime she let them out & lots of times they would get hurt. The other dog was barking non stop. Since she put the tarp on her fence, the neighbor's dog dosen't bark and her greys don't run back and forth along the fence. :)

Thanks everyone. I have had Chase about two months now. As far as the tarp idea, He loves to run with neighbors dogs and I'd hate to take that from him. Now he has started waking me up at 3 am so he can go outside to bark at ......nobody. I am still trying the treat and quiet command with little success. I haven't given up hope yet. If that is his only major flaw I can deal with it. His personality is blossoming everyday. He is so playful and loves to run in the house with my boyfriend. They play tag and a game I call stand-off. It's hilarious. I will get pics soon just haven't figured out my digital camera upload yet. ::)

Pictures would be cool. :) You may find that Chase will stop barking as much as he really settles in. One of mine barked quite a bit when I first got him. He would bark at anything that he saw moving through the window and run from window to window chasing it. He seems to care less now. About the only thing they bark at now is when the pizza delivery man rings the doorbell. #lolwaving# #1140507bbq#

I hope he does quiet down a bit. He's a noisy fellow. Constantly whining at us for pets no-stop. He hates when I use the computor, he stands next to me and whines until I pet him. He is the center of attention at all times in this house. If we don't pet him, he gets our slippers and tosses them around. We only get peace during naps and if there is a squirrel/cat on the porch he can stare down. He also has figured out where all the dogs in the neighborhood live and trys to walk to their yards every walk. I never realized how many people let their dogs roam loose until I got him. I think they have radar they always seem to find us. Sometimes it's nice but many it just scares me. For my dog and what might happen to the other one in the long run. anyhow thanks for the help and welcomes.

try ignoring him when he whines. eventually he will get the idea that whining won't get him what he wants.
