The state of Maryland has started bear hunting season, it made me sick to my stomach that on the news last evening an 8 year old girl killed her first bear. The news made her out to be a hero, I voluteer at the Baltimore Zoo and habve studied the black and polar bears and this breaks my heart . I guess she never saw the movie Brother Bear. I wish people would not hunt, this is not a sport. How would they liked to be hunted and killed for a prize or the glory. We have enough meat and chicken in the stores.

That is aweful. Poor bears and they would probably say they are just controlling the bear population.

I'm not a hunter and I've never fired a rifle or even a b-b gun at anything. But I grew up in Minnesota and I live in Montana in the summers now and so I can tell you that watching elk, deer, and even bears die from starvation is brutal. And it spreads disease that is a lingering death in the wild. In this case, if the bears aren't killed in a hunt they are killed when the wander into town looking for food - food that should be in the wild but isn't there because a new development was built on their feeding grounds.
I certainly am no fan of hunting, but sometimes it is a better way for them to go than the other options.
Respectfully submitted, Jonathan

In Ontario the government has banned the Spring bear hunt primary due to the fact that cubs are left orphaned. Many Northern Ontarians are opposed to this b/c they feel it does not control the bear population and the problem of nuisance bears is now growing. IMHO, I believe the banned is a good think b/c over population may be a concern to some but to think of a litter of cubs starving and suffering b/c the momma was killed breaks my heart. Furthermore the increase in nuisance bears is also (if not primarily) due to the fact that all these "clone zone" subdivisions are spreading rampant across the wildlife's habitat...Where do people propose these bears go? Why is hunting/killing always the answer to the problem most often inflicted by man? ??? ...I also can't imagine handing a little girl a riffle!!! :o

I heard about that girl on the news. It got me sick. I agree with Multiplicity; maybe instead of shooting animals, there should be something done about taking over their habitat.
Anybody who supports hunting should try watching the movie Never Cry Wolf. It was one of the most hearbreaking films I have ever viewed.
