We just adopted a whippet over the weekend and it seems as though she is having a hard time adjusting. Her previous owners kept her as a show dog, but it didn't work out. She got very little attention or affection from them. She is now living with us and our grey and she is very skittish. She is very leary of him, maybe because of his size. She seems to have no interest in playing. Our grey shows little interest in playing with her either. When he does, he stands above her and playfully growls, but she gets scared and cowls in the corner. She is very jumpy with sudden movements and noises. I am just concerned that this will become a way of life. I would like her to calm down and relax instead of pace all the time. She is only a year old and our grey is 5, but he acts like a puppy when he plays. She also runs into the glass doorwall when it is closed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to build some confidence in her and encourage play time between her and our grey. I would like them to have fun together. Let me know if there is anything we can do. Thanks!

She will not adjust in one weekend, it could take several weeks or maybe longer for her to realize she is home. And if the dog was not socialized to house living in her first home then everything is new to her, like sliding glass doors, dogs bigger than a whippet, play time, etc......
Time, consistency of schedule and love should take care of most of these things and her confidence should grow. But like shy greyhounds and greyhound "spooks", there are whippets who exhibit these same behaviors that often take longer to overcome. Of course some dogs never overflow with confidence when presented with new situations but come to be more comfortable as their experiences grow.
If you send me a PM with the breeder's name I might be able to tell you about their dogs. And if you know the registered name of the dog you have or the sire/dam I can tell you a lot more too.
