Tampa Greyhound will mark their 74th racing season Saturday matinee July 1. Due to the recent kennel cough outbreak the track will begin with abbreviated performances. The double header on July 1, offers eight races for the matinee and eight races at night. The Inaugural and the Futures Champion stakes have tentatively been rescheduled for the following weekend.
Last year's top dog Joe Hearns, who was among the eight Greyhounds named to the 2005 All America Team for the Floyd & Porter Kennel, has been schooling at Tampa and is expected to appear in the upcoming Inaugural race. McAllister and LaRosa Enterprises shared the top spot last year with 127 wins each. Both kennels intend on a repeat season with more fine juveniles.
Last year LaRosa dominated the opening week with a win by Kaias Comet in the Future Champions race and Up To Speed gave them the Inaugural win. McAllister will oversee two kennels this season and hopes his McAllister kennel and the new Mega kennel will finish one-two for the meet.
Tampa Greyhound is slated to run Saturday, July 1-through Dec. 30, 2006 with a special July 4 Matinee with no live action racing Tuesday night July 4. The track's regular season schedule offers matinees on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday this season and nightly racing Monday-Saturday. By Vera Filipelli
