Derby Lane will celebrate the season finale on Friday night June 30 with free admission, a cash giveaway and the 80th running of the St. Petersburg Derby. Although the stakes series was shortened because of kennel cough and the Consolation race eliminated, a fine field emerged from the list of entries that will compete for the stakes win on Friday. The race features this seasons top dog Extruding Dream (Impossible Dream-Iwantthattrophy) who has compiled a fantastic resume this season.
Extruding Dream and his littermates stormed the Derby Lane season after a successful campaign at Tampa. On Tuesday Extruding Dream tied the seasons win mark with the legendary Cayman Went posting his 36th win of the meet. Extruding Dream is the early favorite in the stakes race that also features his brother Phenomenal Dream. A third littermate, Shameless Dream, wraps up the season as the number two athlete.
The littermates may be the favorites in the field but if D'Arcy Kennel has their way it will be Oneco Dasani that will score the victory in the season finale. D'Arcy Kennel was the winner of the Derby Lane Million and Dasani, who has lit the board in her last four starts, should not be underestimated. Raines Kennel's Greys Midas Eyes is another athlete that should not be overlooked. The speedster has beaten stakes quality fields this season and is one of the most consistent distance finishers in the race.
Brumage/Filipelli, winner of last year's Consolation Derby with Abita Holly, hopes a lot of racing luck will bring in USA Hi Pockets who drew unfavorably in the five post. An interesting pup in the mix is Waubun Buddy of the Floyd & Porter Kennel who only has seven official starts. The young gun made a respectable bid in qualifying from the same number six post where he will make his stakes bid from. Campbell kennel's Mesa Covina has been known to upset a field when least expected. He is a late starter that rallies at the end. He will need to break within striking distance against this field. Tim Goforth from the Connell kennel prefers the rail post. He needs to be in front or near it to be in the hunt.
The St. Petersburg Derby will be race 10 among the 10-race season finale. Derby Lane will begin the summer simulcast on July 1 offering daily poker play and simlucasting of horses, Jai-alai and Greyhounds. By Vera Filipelli.
