The 10th annual running of the 550-yard T. L. Weaver Memorial Challenge stakes was held in race eight Saturday night June 10. C & C Kennel won their first stakes race of the season with Oneco Gingham (Gable Dodge-Oneco Mistletoe) who became the second female in the history of the stakes to cross first. The first was RL Mickey Lou that won the 2002 stakes for the Ballard Kennel.
The betting favorite in the race was RX Hummer of the Magic City Kennel who was the second female among the six males in the stakes.
When the box opened it was Gingham who had the early foot at the break. Gingham took a 3-length lead that was dwindling at the wire. Gingham won by a half-length but did not surprise trainer Dale Horan who liked her post in the race.
“I knew she had a good shot if she got the lead,” he said.
Fast Tide was closing quickly and finished second followed by RX Hummer and Solitary Demon that made up the superfecta combination of 3-5-4-6 that paid $2,447.40.
Fifth through eighth was Top Cat Orson, CTW Bigrighauler, While U Wait and RL Wild Cat.
Oneco Gingham paid $14.20, $7.40 and $5.20. Fast Tide finished second paying $19 and $6.80. Rx Hummer paid $3 for show. By Vera Filipelli
