Pet adoption programs aimed at senior citizens are popping up around the country. Older people and older pets are often a perfect match, since many seniors prefer the companionship of a mature, more mellow dog or cat, and older pets get a forever home with people who have lots of time and love to give. Queen Anne's County in Maryland recently launched the Senior to Senior program, matching up people age 60-plus with older animals. Because many seniors are on a fixed income, the adoption fee is waived. The Progressive Animal Welfare Society in Seattle, Washington, has a program called Seniors for Seniors that is all about rediscovering the joys of having a cat or dog in your life. Besides a reduced adoption fee, they offer a certificate for a free health exam and follow-up support from PAWS volunteers. And in Cleveland, Ohio, the Sanctuary for Seniors for Senior Dogs is developing a program called Champions to bring elderly people and old dogs together. To encourage adoption, the adoption fee is reduced or waived, and services may include transportation for vet visits and volunteers to walk the dogs if needed. Another organization dedicated to adopting out old pooches is Senior Mutt Match in San Diego, California. Their website contains a number of resources for older adopters, such as articles on the care and benefits of older pets and source of financial support. Seniors adopting seniors: It might be the latest trend among the retiring baby boomers and what a great idea! ;D

We have placed retired broodies in homes with seniors. One dear lady adopted two senior broodies, another just adopted one a couple of months ago. It's a wonderful combination.
