DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) -- Trailing at halftime, the Frankfurt Galaxy turned to Butchie Wallace and asked him to run.
Wallace did, rushing for 138 second-half yards and a touchdown Saturday to help the Galaxy collect a record fourth World Bowl title with a 22-7 win over the Amsterdam Admirals. He also set up a second score with a 63-yard run and was selected MVP.
"I couldn't believe it. I kept seeing the holes and I kept pounding and pounding," Wallace said.
The Galaxy turned to their vaunted running attack after the Admirals took a 7-2 lead into halftime, the lowest scoring half in the history of NFL Europe's showcase event.
Wallace, a free agent hoping for an NFL job, burst off left tackle for 4 yards in the third quarter to give the Galaxy their first lead of the game, 9-7. After carrying once for 5 yards in the first half, he finished with 143 yards on 18 carries.
Frankfurt broke the league record with 1,750 yards rushing in the 10-game regular season and outdid that with 269 Saturday as the linemen on their top ranked offense kept shoving aside defenders.
Roger Robinson, who set the NFL Europe record with 1,087 yards, picked up 96 on 19 carries, and was supposed to be the Galaxy's go-to player. But it was Wallace -- who joined the team in the fifth game -- who did the main damage.
Galaxy coach Mike Jones stuck to his game plan and broke the usual World Bowl pattern of the game being dominated by a quarterback.
"Without a question we are a running team and we did what we do best," Jones said.
One fourth quarter drive lasted 8:42, with the ball given to Wallace or Robinson nearly every time. It ended with David Kimball's 37-yard field goal, putting Frankfurt ahead 15-7.
Admirals guard Michael King was taken off the field in an ambulance late in the fourth quarter, delaying the game for several minutes. The injury wasn't serious.
But Admirals coach Bart Andrus said it may have broken his team's momentum. The Admirals still had a chance to tie with a touchdown and 2-point conversion.
It came with the Admirals down to the Galaxy 25 with 2 minutes to play. King lay on the ground motionless after Frankfurt defensive end Josh Cooper broke through to sack Jared Allen for an 11-yard loss.
"We weren't able to overcome that," Andrus said.
Wallace later had a 63-yard run to set up fullback J.R. Niklos' 12-yard score to end the game.
The game could be a turning point for him. Wallace injured his knee during Galaxy training camp, then languished at home until Frankfurt called when Robinson sat out a game with a concussion. The injury happened after the Vikings failed to ask him to return to the team.
"I guess this worked out pretty well," the former Marshall player said. "Now I just hope this gives me some opportunities."
The Admirals were the league's best passing team, but Frankfurt's top-ranked defense sacked Allen six times and knocked him from behind on a throw to force a wobbly interception. He threw for 126 yards on 13-of-26 passing.
The Galaxy, playing in a record seventh World Bowl, denied Amsterdam the chance to become the second team to win back-to-back titles. Jones and offensive coordinator Whitey Jordan became the first to win the game three times.
Both teams were missing their starting quarterbacks, but the pass-oriented Admirals had more trouble coping with the loss of league MVP Gibran Hamdan, who had a record passer rating of 113.4 before his season ended three weeks ago with a broken ankle.
With Hamdan, the team was 6-1 and averaged more than 30 points a game. Since then it went 1-3, averaging 15 points.
Larry Croom scored the Admirals' lone touchdown in the second quarter on a 12-yard run.
Both teams had trouble on a slippery field despite the roof at LTU Arena. Rain poured in when it was open for most of the first quarter to clear smoke from the pre-game show.
