Some of you may have read my saga in "Other Pets" but I'm curious if anyone has any opinions. Loki LOVES to chew so we keep him well supplied with bones at all times so he doesn't chew anything else. So far, so good. We give him giant cowbones as well as <gasp> rawhide bones (supervised).
However, I heard that Nylabones are good for him so I bought one and he LOVED it. But, that evening we found that he had a gross open sore on his lip just hours after starting in on the Nylabone! We took the Nylabone away and within 24 hours the sore dried up and started to scab over...
So evidently the Nylabone had a bad effect on Loki and caused him, somehow, to get a raw sore on his lip. Anyone else experience this with Nylabones? They are supposed to be so safe and indestructable and good for the teeth, etc. Just curious.

We were told by someone (I cannot remember who) that nylabones tend to splinter. I bought some anyways, because no matter what ya buy someone tells ya it is dangerous, but none of my greys ever liked them...

My dogs won't touch them, even in the worst of boredom- but they're not chewers anyway. I have not heard of this before. I'd guess if he liked the toy he probably chewed it until it had the rough surface they tend to get on the ends, and then may have scraped himself with it?

My guys love nylabones. I've never seen them get a sore from them though. Perhaps firing off an email to Nylabone and posing the question to them, they might be able to alert you to a potential allergen to Loki.

I always find marrow bones are fantastic for keeping them occupied, but be carefull about the edges getting sharp, saw them off when they do, my friends border terrier managed to slice his whole bottom lip off on one that was not sawed down

I don't think our guys like them. Trish is the bone buyer.

Thanks for the input, all! Loki's lip sore, which looked extremely raw and painful at first, cleared up right away when we took away the Nylabone -- within 48 hours! Now he gets supervised rawhides and big bovine bones...no more Nylabones for him! Not sure what the problem was as he had only chewed it for a little while so it didn't have time to splinter yet -- sensitive skin?
