Casino Gambling In Black Hawk County Apr 16, 2006 It’s a sure bet. Casino gambling is coming to Black Hawk County. But, where? There are three plans to land riverboat gambling. Lost Island Park, downtown Waterloo and the Waterloo Greyhound Park. Tomorrow and Wednesday, backers of these three gambling plans will show their cards and present their proposals to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. But, only one of them hits the jackpot. 17 mayors say Lost Island Park is the best bet. And, KWWL agrees. Lost Island Park has found strong support in the community. It’s a plan that makes sense. And, when it comes to tourism, it’s a plan that makes dollars and cents. The park’s location is the ace in the hole. It’s located just off Highways 20 and 218 in Waterloo . It has great accessibility and visibility. Here’s your reality check. 200 acres versus two blocks. Lost Island Park covers 200 acres -- large enough for a casino, two hotels, four restaurants and more. Compare this to the downtown plan -- which covers only two blocks. It’s a classic case of David versus Goliath. But, in this case, Goliath wins. As for the Waterloo Greyhound Park, voters have defeated gaming twice. It lacks community support. The Lost Island Park plan will also pump millions of dollars into Black Hawk County for property tax relief, capital improvements and charitable contributions. Four million dollars before the doors open. That’s a community partner. When the cards are dealt and the hands are played, Lost Island Park is the clear winner.
