JUAREZ, Mexico, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 19, 126 greyhounds will begin to cross the Mexican border back into the U.S. in search of adoptive homes. Immigration officials or border police won't chase them. After all, they are American citizens.
After entertaining racing fans at the track in Juarez, these racers are ready to retire. Like so many of us, they want to spend the rest of their lives in loving homes in their native land.
Greyhound Pets of America (GPA), a non-profit group dedicated to finding homes for retired greyhounds, is working with other adoption groups to identify families willing to adopt these wonderful pets. The greyhounds are adoption ready and have had medical check ups and have been spayed or neutered.
"We appreciate any help we can get in finding good homes for these wonderful dogs," said GPA president Rory Goree. "For people who can't adopt but want to help, we would be grateful for donations to help with medical care, food and transportation for these dogs."
According to Goree, greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are intelligent, quiet, clean, gentle and good-natured dogs that adjust readily to their new home environment. They are eager to please and respond positively to attention. They do not need a lot of space to run but they do need exercise. Their sociability generally makes them great with other pets. Because they are so gentle and good-natured, they are especially good around children.
If you are interested in adopting a retired racer on in making a donation, call GPA, the greyhound retirement specialists, at 1-800-366-1472. GPA is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation founded in 1987 for the purpose of finding homes for ex-racing greyhounds and educating the public on the suitability and availability of greyhounds as pets.
