After reading about inhumane practices and a startling euthanasia rate at the city's Animal Care Services shelter, librarian and animal lover Cammie Gunter said she couldn't sit still and let her anger stew.
Gunter decided to create a showcase of programs and agencies to help all kinds of animals, from the wild to the well-groomed, which became the "Show You Care Animal Fair."
The second annual fair, scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Central Library, is one of three events this weekend that will cater to pet owners, animal advocates and those in search of a new four-legged friend.
"I was shocked and appalled, as most people probably were," Gunter said of reading the Express-News series "Death by the pound."
"When I read that I thought, 'Well, what can I do using my position in the library?'" she said. "I knew there were a lot of positive things people were doing for the animals."
Sunday's fair will feature a pet CPR demonstration led by Cathy Rosenthal of the Humane Society of Bexar County/SPCA at 1:15 p.m. and a presentation by Lisa Williams, an animal healer and communicator, at 2:30 p.m.
Stray Cat Adoptions of Texas, the Humane Society and the Animal Defense League will have animals to adopt. Heart of Texas Greyhounds, a local organization that rescues, fosters and adopts greyhounds, will also have dogs available for adoption.
Organizations including Citizens for Pound Reform, Wildlife Rescue, San Antonio Ferret Enthusiasts, Man & Beast, Guide Dogs of Texas and Spay/Neuter Assistance Program will have information on rescue, adoption, spay/neuter services and rehabilitation.
Candi White, shelter director for San Antonio Ferret Enthusiasts, said the fair is an opportunity for her organization to educate the public on keeping ferrets as pets.
"We are there for education, education, education," White said. "We want to let people know exactly what they are getting into when they get one of these little critters."
Pet owners who need their companions vaccinated, licensed or trained should go to the "Pets for Life" health fair from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Beacon Hill Presbyterian Church. The fair is sponsored by the Responsible Pet Owners Alliance and the city's Animal Care Services.
This fair will offer information on low-cost services, free dog obedience training, pet behavior problems and proper care. The group also is offering rabies vaccinations for $8, city pet licenses for $5, microchips for $15 and American Kennel Club good citizen tests for $10.
For dog lovers in search of a new friend, Animal Care Services will have puppies and dogs available for adoption from noon to 6 p.m. today at the Houston Street Fair & Market, on Houston Street between Alamo and Navarro streets.
