Hello again, I was just wondering how you got involved with and wanting to adopt greyhounds, they are not listed in the classified section of the newspaper under pets for sale, nor in the local pound, or pet store. And why greys, said over collies, or yorkies. What drew you too them, just being noisy. Oh by the way, Robinw I've been meaning to tell you I love your picture of all your babies, they are the cat, I just want to them, esp. the cat Luis, I love him, what breed is he is just beautiful, of along with your greys, is that one actully, the color grey, it may just be my failing vision. I love them! By the way don't you see more grey color grayhounds as too other, don't get me wrong I love all the colors and the different markings, are pure greys rare, again being noisy. Thanks

I have been going to the track since 1985. Although I have a few whippets (9 in my house right now) it was the greyhound that started it all.

You probably now this Patricia but I will tell. Trish and I started vol with a local group for awhile and did some events. We fell in love with the breed and decided after we got married to adopt one. Our first was our big boy Zeus and then you would say we just chipped. ;D

I used to live in Wichita KS, that's where I adopted my first 2 greyhounds. I worked meet and greets for them. In Washington, I do a meet and greet once a month at Petco, do home visits, follow up calls. I try to help out any way I can. We are getting a load of dogs this week we are excited and making preparations for that!!

i used to work in a building that was located in a park. every day a guy would pass my window walking a GSD and two greyhounds. every day i ran out of my office to see them. it took 10 years to finally be in a position to adopt.
thanks for the compliment. patricia. i wish i could take credit for the pic, but i can't. linus was my birthday present to myself four years ago. i walked into the local shelter and asked for the oldest cat who had been there the longest amount of time. i left with linus, age 6. she is grey and if she is a specific breed, i have no idea if she is a specific breed. all i know is that she is the sweetest, most gentle cat i have had. she nevr hissed, her claws never come out, and she loves the dogs.

We had never owned a dog before and I was a big fan of Border Collies, we phoned our local rescue center up and they said they had 9 Collies in, would we like to come and see them. We went down there a week later...by this time, all 9 Collies had already been reserved! We decided to take a look at the rest of the dogs Dog 1 was a Maremma Sheepdog called Baiden (who is still there now as the guard dog), he was huge and didn't like strangers...lovley as he was...he wouldn't have been the best 'first dog' Dog 2 was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Penny, we were told she was a bit of a escape artist...as the gate was secured with just a latch and we had had no experience of dogs and dog proofing before, again, we decided this was no the best option Dog 3 was a Jack Russell who had just had a litter of puppies and was still feeding them Then.....dog 4.....my Lenny Bobs! We fell in love with him straight away! We took him for a walk and had him home that afternoon to see how he coped.....we couldn't take him back!

I never wanted dogs, was even scared of them, it was my husband who brought up the subject. I insisted on a puppy and we were waiting for a poodle pup. But than he brought home an article he found in a magazine about someone bringing over spanish galgo's. It took several phonecalls with Greyhounds in Nood before I decided to go for it. We ended up with a 6 year old, large female named Isa. She learned me how gentle and sweet these dogs are. This was over 5 years ago, these days I am active as a volunteer for our group and proud mom of 4.

I got my first grey from being at the vet with my late lurcher. Bones was brought in by the local dog warden after being found wandering the streets for some time. He weighed in at 23 lbs, and was very near death from hunger and dehydration. I was so touched, I offered to pay the vet bill on the grounds that should he survive, I took him. He was treated, but was so dehydrated they had to stuff a hose pipe down his throat to get fluid in him, as they couldnt find a vein for an IV. He survived the night and with lots of TLC from me and my family and work and advice from the vets, he came on in leaps and bounds.
He is now a one man dog. He is still very frightened of men. We have assumed he was dumped at the side of the road as no one ever tried to claim him. We have whats called a flapping track nearby, eg an unregulated track. Meaning no rules and no vet. With my work now with GRS, we get many dogs from there. We have recovered many dogs from the banks of the Forth River, where they have been thrown over the Forth Road bridge, some with concrete blocks attached to there bodies.
I then went on to rescue an 11 month old bitch, who was going to be shot at the track, as she showed no interest in chaseing at a trail night. Luckily for her I was there to take her.
I know in my work we can't save them all, but we do try.
Thats how I became loved by 2 wonderful greyhounds.
Shawn

Well our first dog Moira (Belguim Shepard Mix) we adopted at the age of 11 from a kill shelter. A couple from work had many personal problems and dumped her at the local shelter. I heard about it and my husbands words to me were, "Go get her". Moira was a beautiful girl that was with us for 2 years before having a stroke.
After losing her, we both knew that we wanted to adopt and rescue a dog. We were going to go to our local Humane Society to adopt when a women from work said, "Hey Lin, how about adopting a greyhound?" A greyhound...there so big and strange looking - lol. I did a little research and decided that yes, they are cool dogs and their temperments seemed right for our life style. I put my application into a local group here in Jersey and Chance was our first greyhound. He was a big, beautiful red fawn. After Chance passed (osteo) we knew that we were hooked. Jett was our second and my nutty girl Cricket (she was a foster) was our third.
Thank you Moira for starting the whole greyhound thing....we miss you and love you baby. You will never be forgotten.

Just wondering do you know which tracks these dogs are coming from? We get our dogs from Colorado. They actually come off the farms.

I saw a documentary on greyhounds, greyhound racing and greyhounds post racing. The documentary was presented a neutral tone in regards to racing, however, did mention the possible fate of these beautiful creatures if they were unable to get into an adoption group/adoptive home. It left me crying and seeking info on how to adopts ex-racers here in Canada.
