One of my dearest friends called me this a.m. to wish me a happpy new year. She and her husband, Conrad, just rescued their sixth horse. The have a beautiful, all stone old farm house just before the Md. and Penn. state line. They also have 4 dogs, 3 cats, and don't ask me why, but a snake. Lisa is such a great gal, she grew up with horses, took riding lessons at a very young age and for many years worked at the track in Baltimore. she loved working at Pimlico taking care of the horses, she exercised them, fed them, gave them baths, and the most glamous job, you guessed it, cleaning the stalls. She also dream
of being a jockey, but she grew too tall ,weighed too much as she puts it, her polish genes said no. She knew many of the trainers, other handlers, and many owners. She told me its a big industryand its come a long way,may not be perfect but is getting better. She keeps in contact with the folks at the track and behind the scene. Horses bring in a lot of money, serious money seven days a week, hoildays, they even race in the rain and snow, but not on ice. She was around when the horses were injected with steriods for speed. If a horse was the underdog and the owner paid so and so, they used to place sandbags in the saddle to slow the the true winner down. Those were sometimes and tactis like that have long stopped. Alot of dirty policits. She loved her job and would still be there if she had not been thrown off her horse and kicked in her head. she didn't think she would ever walk again. she spent one year at the Maryland Shock Trauma, here in Baltimore and two years in rehab. She is now a firefighter and paramedic in the Baltimore City Fire Department and a proud mom of two daughters. She still volunteers at the track, giving riding lessons to children who are handicapped and Lisa never misses the Peakness. I asked her about adopting a greyhound and she didn't know much about them, she know they race like the horses, but not as popular, like horse racing. I gave different org. and she said why not I own retired horses, whats another dog. Conrad will just have to deal. Lisa is a true horse lover, she and Conrad got married outside on horse back, the whole cermoney was on horse back including the wedding party. The recepition was in one of her barns. They have three barns, live in a beautiful big old stone house and alot of land with a smal stream running though their land, so peaceful. I'm proud of my friend Lisa, a true lover of animals, esp, horses.
