They promise to be long, arduous but golden laps for a pack of rescued greyhounds. Finished as racers, it's an odyssey that begins today to allow the unwanted canines from the U.S. South to start lives as ordinary pets in Canada. It's also the biggest haul of greyhounds an Alberta rescue society has ever made from the U.S., and the most ambitious operation the Southern Alberta Greyhound Association has attempted to date, said SAGA director Mark Abrams. "This has never been done before," said Abrams of the 33 retired race track dogs rescued from Florida and Texas. SAGA has a reputation through North America for rescuing retired race track greyhounds. The Florida dogs will be loaded onto a commercial truck today, head to Oklahoma, where they will be loaded onto another transport and be driven to Texas, then to Montana and into Alberta. "These haulers are unbelievable," said Abrams. "They're willing to drive 24 hours straight so that the dogs don't spend more time than they have to on the road." "The bottom line is that the dogs in Florida have nowhere else to go ... they have to be moved," Abrams said. More information on the rescue efforts or how to adopt a greyhound is available at the society's website www.sagaa.org. calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/2006/03/15/1488774-sun.html

Man, I WANT to step back from this but....must....walk....away.... , I can't.... I know most of you saw the thread on GT about this, but I don't thing we should make SAGA heros when he refused to allow a willing group to foster 10 of those dogs so they could go into a kill shelter in Edmonton. Yes they made it to Canada, but if they have one bad day at the EHS and have a bite (which my billy had coming in, he was startled when sleeping), they will be pts, not reevaluated as they would be in a group. I do not want to open a can of worms here but being affilliated with the two other groups that work side by said with SAGA, all is not what it seems. Anyone who like details are more than welcome to PM me as most people did on GT. I will NEVER think greyhounds are better off in a shelter than in qualified foster homes. I offered to take one or two myself.......

I posted in that thread and my post, along with the entire thread has disappeared. Let's ressurect it here, where free thought is actually encouraged!
Just because the dogs are going to someone with less sighthound experience than you like does not mean the dogs won't be well cared for. But much more important to this conversation....... Who's the group that offered to foster 10 dogs and when are they arranging their own load of dogs that will otherwise end up in a Florida landfill?

What can be done at this point now that they are in the hands of the Edmonton Shelter? It's very scary to say the least. #4_2_6#

What is scary about it? You should be doing handstands and backflips that they got out of Florida alive!

Quality of life is more important than quantity of adoptions. These 9 dogs could end up in India racing. Pray for them then.

Trish:
Please repost your comments in the right thread. I don't think we should have to visit another thread to read your comments.
But to reply to your comment you've made here here.... dogs should not go to a Florida landfill because you are afraid they may end up in India.
