Everytime I run the vacuum, Oreo will run away from it, leer at it, then sneak around behind me and nit me HARD on the backside or the back of my thigh. Is he truely afraid of the vacuum, or is he trying to pull me away from it, thinking he needs to save me from it? ::)

He may be afraid of the noise, and he is trying to rescue you from "that nasty thing".

He's saving you. Anytime I see someone vacuming I always grab them by the collar and yell "Let's get outta her and go do something fun!"

Well since it seems that the majority says that he's saving me, any suggestions as to how to get him not to do it? It really hurts and once he left a bruise. It was embarassing because it was there when my husband got home a couple of days later and he wanted to know who had clobbered me!

All of our cats are afraid of the vacuum except for one, and she stares at it, following me from room to room, like she's mad at it!
Our dogs (we have Min Pins) HATE the vacuum, and tend to retreat to their beds when I use it, or go out into the yard. They've barked at it before.
I don't blame them, I hate loud noise too (unless it's good MUSIC!)
::)
I would put Oreo in a place she feels safe, as much away from the noise as you can (stop the vacuum and move her when you need to vacuum in her "safe" place).

Today, I put Oreo outside to vacuum. Well, not so that I could vacuum, he had to go out as well. I just used his timing to my advantage!! It worked well!! No "bites" or anything!!

Try leaving the vaccum in the room with him (switched off) while you go about your normal lifes. Then switch it on for a few seconds at a time...just basticly getting him used to it being there

It's only when it's running that he goes nuts. Well, except when I push it around even when it's not running. Maybe he's just a strange pup!! Gotta love him though!

Then switch it on for a few seconds at a time...just basticly getting him used to it being there I tried that with our one cat who is deathly afraid of it...and he would just freak out and wouldn't stay in the room with it! I mean it was just sitting there. He's an old kitty, and has always been a bit skittish. We have to store our vacuum in the guest bedroom because he is so scared of it. Xena, one of our doglets, used to try to bite it when she was a puppy, later on she would whine when she saw me get ready to plug it in...now she either gets in her bed or goes (through the dog flap into our fenced-in backyard) outside. Poor things. Hey, I don't like the noise either! I guess I can't blame them.

My cat runs, but, that's nothing new, he runs when the doorbell rings. Try putting Oreo in a different room with some treats or some toys to help relax him or keep his mind off the noise.

Now that the weather is nicer and warm out, Oreo loves to spend good amounts of time outside. I'll just use that to my advantage, vacuum when he's out, and he can still hear the vacuum and then when I'm done, I'll let him see that it didn't eat Mom! He likes to run along the fence when I mow on the other side of the fence, too. He's coming around to not being so afraid. Yesterday, I put the mower inside the dog yard and let him sniff it all over before putting him in the house to mow the dog yard.
