I am a greyt mom, really I am! So why is my family falling apart??? Hop-along-Cassidy (Chevy) is kinda at a stand still in terms of improvement but at least he's not getting worse. Now my poor Devo has a bloody "tip"!
I am pretty sure that Devin has an UTI. His pee is yellow and he does not seem to have to pee more than normal but I found blood on his - - well you know where! :-/ I pulled the skin/fur back to check out his thingy and everything looks good there...there are no lesions, not puss or sign of infection. I work in the lab at the hospital so I am gonna bring in a pee sample a little later and then I will know for sure if it is a UTI. I know Solid Gold makes some cranberry capsules for UTI's so what I am wondering is if I can use some human cranberry capsule that are used for the same thing in humans? Can I give Devin cranberry juice?
...oh, my new vet is gonna think I am incompetent...

I use cranberry capsules, made for humans, on my pets. And myself. If you can get an animal to drink cranberry juice, go for it! But most won't touch it.

PS I avoid antibiotics at all costs... it takes up to a year for your pet to recover from a round of them. If possible, try not to do this to their immune systems in my opinion.

I have the capsules for humans...I gave him one this morning. How much should I give him and for how long? The bottle directs an adult human to take 2 capsules daily and that 2 capsules = one 8-10oz glass of cranberry juice. Can I OD him on cranberry? All 3 of my hounds took a turn at the cranberry watering station but I do not think I would be able to get enough in to be beneficial.

I give one capsule morning and one at night- for a dog I suspect has a UTI. That's just me, though. I am not sure what a vet would suggest. I personally don't think cranberry can be harmful. I drink tons of it... I loooooooove it, with and without vodka LOL
Wow your dogs will drink it? How much did they drink? I might try mixing a bit in every day when I make my dogs' meals.

Good luck! Fresh cranberries would be great too, I suppose. Yum. I'm hungry now! Oh, BTW, some people claim that canned gel type cranberry sauce (yum, I love that too) is also effective.

My neighbour said she takes a bag of frozen cranberries, boils them in a quart or so of water until the bursts and are all mushy and then add that to her doggie's meals. Thanks again! #grins# ps. Devin is the cutie you see to the left (avatar).

I hope your crew is up to par soon!!!

So whats the update on your babies? Thanks for asking! I just came back from a four day excursion to sh*t-hole Sault Ste. Marie and was so happy to come home and see Chevy greet me at the door without limping!!! He is almost perfect!!! He only limps if he has been on it for a long time. He goes to the vet for a check-up Friday and hopefully by then he will be able to trot on up to her on all 4 legs! Devin seems to be too! We have been giving him 2 cranberry capsules a day and there is no blood or signs of an UTI. CRANBERRY CAPSULES REALLY WORK! :)
